What Are 2-Zone Lacing Boots? Benefits, Fit, and How They Work
WHAT IS 2-ZONE LACING?
You have probably heard us mention that some of our boots have what is called “2-zone lacing.” So, what does that mean?
2-zone lacing is a technology that allows you to adjust the upper and lower lacing tightness independently on your boot for personalized comfort and support. This keeps you locked-in and blister-free on rough terrain and long hikes.
HOW DOES 2-ZONE LACING WORK?
The structure of a 2-zone lacing system is the same as traditional lacing with one main difference: a lace lock that holds the lower metatarsal laces in place. This allows you to get your ideal tightness for your foot, lock the laces, and then adjust the tightness of the shaft of the boot separately . Once the laces are locked, they won’t come loose until you release the lock.
THE BENEFITS OF 2-ZONE LACING
· A tighter boot helps prevent heel slippage—the number one cause of blisters.
· Keeping a tighter instep and a looser ankle allows greater mobility and takes the pressure off your shin.
· Greater comfort from a personalized fit leads to less fatigue over long days.
A LACE-UP GUIDE FOR 2-ZONE LACING
For a full step-by-step walkthrough, watch the Missoula 2.1 Lacing video on our YouTube page.
When you’re ready to boot up, first make sure the lace locks are open. To do this, grab the laces below the lock, and pull out and away. The lace locks will snap open and you’re free to adjust the lower section.
Put the boot on and tighten the lower boot laces. It should be firm, but not constrictive.
To lock it, grab the lace feeding out from the top of the lock and pull toward the center.
The locks will click into place, securing the lower zone.
Finish lacing the uppers to your preference, then tie the boot as you normally would. Now you’re set for long days over rugged, hilly terrain.
